 OUR
COMMUNITY is full of caring, friendly people who are actively
involved in the development of Clovis
From June through October there are activities
and events for everyone including: Pioneer Days with a parade
and rodeo; Smoke on the Water,
a world class fireworks display; the Badlands Motorcycle Rally; the High
Plains Junior Rodeo Finals and the Annual Arts Festival are just some
of the highlights of Clovis activities presented by the Chamber
of Commerce and other community members and organizations.A great place to live and a safe place to raise a family. That
is what Clovis is all about. Come on... come grow with us!
housing |
Clovis is an excellent place to purchase a home and statistics support that fact. The city is currently experiencing steady growth in an appreciating market. In 2006 to date 758 homes were sold which is a steady increase of 22% over 2005. The average sale price of resale homes was $118,000 in 2006 and $101,000 in 2005. New construction homes have been selling between $125,000 and $400,000. The average price of a new construction home is $275,000 and construction costs average $110 a square foot. Compare these prices to that elsewhere in the Sunbelt and Clovis is a clear winner in the housing market.
These affordable prices will buy you and your family quality homes. Most homes in Clovis average 1,600 to 1,800 sq ft. New Mexico is noted for its southwestern adobe style homes, but in Clovis, homeowners can choose from a variety of styles – from one-story ranch homes to two-story colonials and Victorians, Clovis offers the variety and durability of what a good home should be. Also, most of the homes in Clovis are brick construction, making them very efficient when it comes to utility bills.
Recreation and Leisure activities |
Recreation
Clovis has made a commitment to families through its parks and recreational
facilities. There are 17 parks, 17 baseball/softball fields, 12 playgrounds,
11 soccer field, 3 football fields, an archery range and an off-road vehicle
area.
Parks throughout the city include Dennis Chavez Park with
a lake, playground and picnic areas. Green Acres
Park, also
within the city limits, offers the closest fishing
around as the lake is stocked with trout and bass. Ned Houk Park, 10 miles north of town,
is the site of many area events. Hillcrest Park is
the home to sunken gardens and the state's second largest
zoo. Bob Spencer Park is
frequently in use during softball season and the Guy
Leeder softball complex
offers 5 fields for play. Two golf courses round
out the recreational facilities, along with an outdoor
pool at Potter Park
and an indoor pool at Play Inc.
Nearby Leisure Areas
A variety of sports and leisure areas are just a few hours away from Clovis.
Eight State Parks, one National Monument and four ski areas are all within
a within a one to four hour drive. Skiing and hang gliding, rafting and hot
springs are all close enough for a week-end getaway. Numerous lakes and rivers
offer some of the best fishing in the country. Ute Lake, Lake Sumner and
Santa Rosa Lake offer opportunities to water ski, catch bass, crappie, walleye
and trout. Hiking, birdwatching and boating offer plenty of activities for
the outdoor-lovers. And events such as the Albuquerque Balloon Festival and
horse racing at Ruidoso Downs offer large-scale entertainment.
The Southeast of New Mexico is also home to Carlsbad Caverns,
with deep subterranean caves showcasing incredible formations. White Sands
National Monument near Alamogordo, with its ever-shifting gypsum sand
dunes, provides an excellent recreation area for families. Fun getaways
for the family include the New Mexico Space Museum in Alamogordo and exploring
the history of the aliens in Roswell. And for the lure of the old west,
nothing beats Fort Sumner's Billy the Kid Museum and what legend says
is Billy the Kid's grave, just a 45 minute drive from Clovis.

New Mexico is well-known for its love of art and Clovis boasts an active
artist community. With several art galleries that feature award-winning works
by local artists, one of the most highly anticipated events of the year is
the Clovis Downtown Arts Festival. Sponsored in the fall by the Downtown Revitalization
Program, this yearly event begins with a wine and cheese gala and features
displays of folk and fine art throughout the downtown district. An independent
film festival that garners entries from around the world is now part of the
event.
Clovis Community College sponsors a Cultural Arts Series that continues
to bring in world-class entertainment. Carlos Nunez, Rita Coolidge and Zydeco
master Terrence Simian have all performed as part of the series. Summer brings
musicals to the college and theatrical performances are offered year round.
Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, less than a 20 minute drive from
Clovis, also offers musical, theatrical and cultural entertainment. ENMU
is the home of both a PBS radio and television station.
And
when it comes to music, Cloviis rich in its contribution
to rock 'n' roll! Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings
and the Fireballs recorded
with Norman Petty at the famous 7th
Street Studios in the fifties and sixties.
Musical history continues to be made as stars such as LeAnn
Rimes have recorded in Clovis.
And don't forget, part of the rich historical culture of Clovis
is the archaeology of the area. The Clovis Man was
discovered just south of Clovis in 1929. The archaeological site
at Blackwater Draw has produced bones, tools and other evidence
of man's existence over 12,000 years ago in what is considered
